Picking favorite songs, ugh, it sounds easy, but
easily turns into quite the task. I have zero musical talent but love music.
Here is a list of five songs that I never tire of.
1. “Reality” by Al-Axe Luna
Years ago I heard a
rumor that white trash South African artists were tearing up the hip-hop scene,
and they were called Die Antwoord. So, I rushed home and looked them up and
found this video for “Enter the Ninja”. First listen, I was thrown off because
it was the most original music I had heard in a long time. Yolandi Vi$$er’s
opening vocals are soft, safe, almost calming, though she pleads for help. Then
out of nowhere Ninja enters with nonstop lyrical punches to the face. This song
makes me feel like a super hero, even though I am not doing super hero things.
3. “I Just Want To Have Something To Do” by The Ramones
This
song is tough, and The Ramones are the epitome cool. I have no one favorite Ramones song. They are Rock & Roll to me. If The Ramones are being played, I am in a good place. "Hey Ho Lets Go!" listen to The Ramones.
4. “Damn it Feels Good to be a Gangster” by Geto Boys
This
song is full of life lessons. I get a little uncomfortable with all the “N”
word usage, being a middle-aged white guy and all, but this song has brought so
much joy to my life. When I listen to it with my wife, we always sing along (without using the "N" word) and
burst out laughing at the line about how “real gangster ass ******* can’t run fast”, , hilarious.
Any mundane activity becomes bad ass just by adding the title of this song. I
am writing my blog, “Damn it Feels Good to be a Gangster”. I do this in my head
all the time, thank you Geto Boys.
5. “Can’t Help Falling in Love” by Elvis Presley
When
I married my wife in Las Vegas, a cheesy Elvis impersonator sang this song to us. It
was a perfect moment. I tear up easily to this ditty because it reminds me how lucky I
am to have met the girl of my dreams.
These are five of my favorite songs because I
will revisit them for the rest of my life.
.
I remember the first time I heard Die Antwoord. I was torn with either being in love with their music or completely against their 'imitation'. Yet I couldn't deny their music was something special and they were genuine in their work.
ReplyDeleteNo one can deny that Elvis Presley and The Ramones are truly epic. Those were great choices, James!
